Shortly after 10 a.m., high winds took down a tree and knocked out power lines in the 2000 block of Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.. The debris left the roadway impassible.

Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer stated, “It’s pretty consistent with what we are seeing across Warren County and the City of Vicksburg. We’ve got sustained winds between 25 and 30 miles-per-hour with wind gusts higher than that.”

Elfer stated conditions are expected to deteriorate over the next few hours as a storm front moves through the area. High winds and spin-up tornadoes will be the major area of concern. “Not to say that we’ll see a tornado, but conditions are certainly favorable for it,” said Elfer. “If you haven’t secured a adequate shelter, now is the time to do that.”

Elfer stated the National Weather Service may be issuing out warnings shortly and asks residents to ensure their alert systems are in place and working.

“The positive thing about this system is that it’s a fast mover, so it should be out of here by this afternoon,” said Elfer. “I think by [5 p.m.] we should see conditions improving.”
