The Bulldogs of Hinds Community College captured a big 76-66 road win against the Jones College Bobcats Monday night, Feb. 3, as they continued their playoff push.

“For us, we needed to see a win on the board. We have been struggling the past few games because we have been turning over the ball too much. This week, our guys were determined to fix what was wrong,” said head coach Yusef Fitzgerald in a statement.

Monday night was truly a team effort as seven players scored for the Bulldogs. Of those seven, three guys stood out as top performers of the game.

Sophomore Dontrell McQuarter, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, tallied 18 points, two assists, two blocks and one steal.

Sophomore Peyton Taylor, of Cleveland, Mississippi, put up 12 points and six rebounds.

Freshman Jordan Johnson, of Memphis, Tennessee, posted 19 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Johnson now has 71 assists and 38 steals on the year, leading the team.

Offensively, Hinds had the magic touch as they shot an incredible 54.5% (36-66) from the field and 76.9% (10-13) from the free-throw line.

“Defensively, we were lights out,” Fitzgerald said.

Hinds held Jones to under 70 points for only the third time all season. The Bobcats shot a minuscule 33.3% from the field and 22.7% from beyond the arc.

With the win, Hinds has completed the two-game regular-season sweep over Jones. With a new decade comes a new trend, as Hinds was unable to accomplish this feat during the 2010s.

“As we are changing the culture, these are the type of wins that display how we can compete with the top-level teams in the MACJC,” Fitzgerald said.

Hinds now turns its attention to the playoff push. With five games left, they are currently tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in the MACJC South Division.

This Thursday, Feb. 6, the Hinds Bulldogs will travel to Meridian to take on the Meridian Community College Eagles (7-11, 2-7). Tip-off for the MACJC South Division matchup is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Hinds and Meridian last met on Jan. 13 in Utica as Hinds took home the win by a score of 85-70.
