Hinds County Sheriff Lee Vance is seeking to deputize police chiefs and assistant chiefs across hinds county so they may be able to respond outside of their jurisdiction, WLBT reports.

Vance is putting the word out to local law enforcement leaders across Hinds County, asking if they would like to take part in this extension of jurisdictional authority. The aim is to allow them the ability to take action to respond to a crime outside their normal jurisdiction and also improve relationships between municipal agencies.

The idea was given to Vance by Terry Police Chief Michael Ivy and has sense been offered to each municipal agency within the county. It is also inspired by the Rankin county Sheriff’s Department which meets with police chiefs often and have improved the bonds between their agencies.

The sheriff would like to hold a ceremony this month to start deputizing.
