Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones assumed responsibility for the escape of four inmates from the Hinds County Detention Center over the weekend and also addressed the jail facility’s issues and staffing problems that facilitated their escape in a press conference on Monday morning. Jones also provided updates on the ongoing investigation and the details of the inmates Dylan Arrington, Casey Grayson, Corey Harrison and Jerry Raynes’s escape.

In the press conference, Sheriff Jones provided additional information on the timeline of the inmates’ escape. The first discovery was made on Saturday night just after 9:30 when a witness reported a white van crashing through the county repair shop’s front gate. At 12:34 a.m. on Sunday, the jail staff discovered that the head count in B-Pod was incorrect. B-Pod 3’s security had been recently upgraded, and a breach was discovered in a cell and on the roof. It was later determined that four inmates had escaped, although the details were not immediately clear.

A red Chevrolet Silverado was reported missing from a nearby neighborhood at 2:30 a.m., followed by a call to Sheriff Jones at 4:45 a.m. that a breach had occurred. Just prior to 5 a.m., the Silverado was spotted heading through Rankin County. The investigation also revealed that the inmates entered the breach at around 8:30 on Saturday night, although not all at once, as evidenced by security footage. It appears that they may have stayed on the roof for some time before fleeing in different directions. Sheriff Jones verified that the escapees were not housed in the same cell.

The Hinds County van was found in Texas with substantial front-end damage. It is uncertain which of the inmates were inside it. Authorities believe that some of those who escaped may still be within Central Mississippi.

Sheriff Jones announced his intentions to discuss the detention center’s challenges with supervisors and work towards their prompt resolution. He further revealed plans to implement an alert system that would notify the residents when inmates escape.
