Hugh Freeze leads Liberty University to first bowl victory

After sitting out from coaching for two seasons, former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze gave Liberty University its first-ever bowl victory on Saturday.

Freeze took over the program in December 2018, and he has moved the team in the right direction ever since. Liberty, located in Lynchburg, Va., went up against Georgia Southern in the Cure Bowl on Dec. 21.

The score stayed close throughout the game, and the biggest lead was at halftime when Liberty led 16-7. Liberty quarterback Stephen Calvert finished the game with 270 yards and two touchdowns on the night, helping his team secure the 23-16 victory over Georgia Southern.

Freeze was pleased with the victory as well as being part of the school’s history by coaching the team to its first bowl game.

Freeze was head coach at Ole Miss from 2012-2016 and resigned after violating the morals clause of his contract. This season was his first year as head coach at Liberty, and he has signed a five-year extension to his contract after leading Liberty to an 8-5 season.
