Hydraulic fire ignites while installing new city flagpole

The City of Vicksburg’s lift being used to install the new flagpole caught fire during the installation on the eastbound side of Interstate 20 at the junction with Highway 61 North on Thursday morning.

The hydraulic lift sustained damage from the fire, but the flames were extinguished quickly and no equipment was destroyed.

The signs had been returned to the manufacturer to correct a printing error on the bridge depicted on the sign, and are now being installed to welcome visitors and passers-by to our beautiful city.

The next step will be to install lighting that will illuminate the sign and American flag at night.
