An inmate at the Yazoo County Regional Correctional Facility has been accused of stabbing a correctional officer in the neck last week.

According to a report by the Yazoo Herald, Alonzo Alexander stabbed a male correctional officer after the officer assisted a female guard during the altercation.

“We have mostly female officers,” stated Warden Gary Edwards during a Yazoo County Board of Supervisors meeting. “Our one male officer went over there to try to protect the female officer.”

Yazoo County Chief Deputy Terry Gann stated the officer was lucky to have survived. He was taken to an area hospital and treated for his injury and released.

Alexander, then 19, was charged with the murder of John Felton, 63. Felton died outside of Oakhaven Apartments in April 2020. Alexander is also charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle at the Shady Lane Apartment complex.

During Alexander’s arrest, items that belonged to Felton were recovered, along with the gun which is believed to have been used in the murder.

Alexander has been housed at the Yazoo County Regional Correctional Facility since 2020 due to Mississippi State Crime Lab being backed up.

“The long wait is strictly on the crime lab,” stated Gann. “They were supposed to have got some new people to double-up on the cases. But we are just waiting on them.”

Edwards’ case has yet to go to court.
