Jackson State defeated Texas Southern on Saturday

JACKSON, MS —The Jackson State men’s basketball team hit 4-of-10 attempts from beyond the arc, shooting 40 percent from deep in a 71-69 win against the Texas Southern Tigers at home Saturday.

The Tigers (10-18, 9-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Coltie Young, who had 19 points. Romelle Mansel added 13 points and Zeke Cook chipped in as well with 12 points, six rebounds and two steals.

How It Happened

After falling behind 16-13, Jackson State went on a 16-0 run with 12:34 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Treyon Johnson, to take a 29-16 lead. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 37-29 advantage. Jackson State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 37 points close to the basket.

The Tigers then held on for the victory in the second half. Jackson State got out on the break in the period, scoring eight fast break points.
