The Vicksburg Warren School District announced on Thursday that James K. Lewis has been selected to serve as Athletic and Activities Director for the District. The hiring of Mr. Lewis was approved by the Board of Trustees in their August 25th meeting.

Mr. Lewis brings ten years of experience to the position, most recently serving as Athletics and Activities Director and Head Coach for the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team at Jim Hill High School in Jackson, Mississippi. “When hiring for the AD position, we were looking for someone capable and devoted to the safety, success, and growth of every child. We believe we found that in James Lewis and are excited to welcome him in this important role,” said VWSD Superintendent, Chad Shealy.

Mr. Lewis is not new to the Vicksburg Warren School District. “I am excited to have the opportunity to return to my hometown and work in the city that provided me with so many opportunities.  I began my career in education in Vicksburg, and I look forward to returning and serving the many stakeholders that represent this community.” he said.

He began his career in education as an English Language Arts teacher at Grove Street Non-Traditional School and coached the Warren Central Junior High 8th grade boys’ basketball and track teams (2013 – 2015). He also served VWSD as the head coach for the Warren Central High School 9th grade Little Six Conference Champion boys’ basketball team (2015-2018) and as assistant coach and interim head coach for the varsity Vikings boys’ basketball team in 2017-18 when they were ranked 13th in the state. Coach Lewis was also an assistant coach for the boys’ track and field team that same year.

“Athletics and Activities played a major role in my life and taught me valuable lessons including discipline, teamwork, collaborating with others from different backgrounds, and overcoming adversity.  Every place I have worked in my career, I have met some really wonderful people who have made my job exciting.  I am confident the Vicksburg Warren School District will be the same.” said Mr. Lewis.

He continued, “I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to return as an employee of the Vicksburg Warren School District.  I am a product of this school district.  I would like to thank Superintendent Chad Shealy, Deputy Superintendent David Campbell, Associate Superintendent Dr. Cedric Magee and the Vicksburg Warren School District Board of Trustees for allowing me to serve in this new role.  I am excited and ready to get to work!”

Mr. Lewis completed his undergraduate degree at Grambling State University in Louisiana, and later earned his Master’s degree from Mississippi State University and an Education Specialist’s degree from Arkansas State University.
