James Michael “Mike” Coomes 1952-2022

James Michael “Mike” Coomes passed away at his home at the age of 69.

Mike was born in Vicksburg, MS on May 6, 1952, to the late Billy Earl Coomes, Sr. and Delores Nohra Coomes.  He served in the U. S. Army for three years and retired from Waterways Experiment Station after 38 years of service.  He loved his family, most especially his grand babies.  He loved hunting and fishing and watching his grandsons play ball and soccer.  He was his son’s biggest fan when he was growing up.  He was a very active member of Bovina Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon since 1981.  He also directed the children’s choir for 25 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Corey Coomes and sister Renee Coomes.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Jane Coomes, his son Michael Coomes (Ashley), brothers Ken Coomes (Janet), Bill Coomes (Monica), Birchett Coomes (Kim) and Bobby Coomes, sisters Donna Steinriede, Evelyn Weaver (Mike), Lori Williams (John), Caroline Sanders and Michelle Cox (Michael) and grandsons Cohen Coomes and Callen Coomes.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, March 28, 2022, at Bovina Baptist Church.  Bro. Randy Burns will officiate the service.  Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of the service.  Burial will follow in Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery, under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Ken Coomes, Billy Coomes, Birchett Coomes, Jimmy Mullen, Keith Stennett and Bubba Rowland.  Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Bovina Baptist Church and the members of the Outreach Sunday School Class.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Bovina Baptist Church Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Fund and Bovina Baptist Church Children’s Choir Ministry.
