Press Release:

FAYETTE, Miss. – Jefferson County School District is pleased to announce that Dr. LaRondrial Barnes has been named athletic director for the 2023-2024 school year.

Dr. LaRondrial J. Barnes is the son of Carolyn and Eddie Barnes. He and his wife, Kiwanis, have three wonderful kids Zharia, Kamron, and Kyron. Barnes is a product of Jefferson County School District, graduating in the Class of 1993. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Alcorn State University in 1998. He also attended the University of Southern Mississippi. Barnes matriculated to William Carey University, receiving his doctoral degree in 2018. A teacher at heart, his teaching tenure includes Chemistry I and II and Physical Science from 1998 through 2006.

“I am extremely grateful to God and Dr. Hammitte for this opportunity to continue giving the students and the community of Jefferson County everything I have to ensure their success,” said Dr. LaRondrial Barnes. “Words cannot express the gratitude nor the dedication I will provide in guiding Jefferson County athletes, coaches, teachers, parents, and all other stakeholders onward and upward as we move into the future. The past has been filled with success, and the mission is to continue to build and add to the legacy of the Jefferson County Athletic Department. I often say D1 athletes have D1 grades; thus, educational and athletic goals must support each other. I solicit the support of Jefferson County Tigers worldwide as we develop a Championship (mindset) Community to support the real champions: Our students, student-athletes, teachers and coaches.

Barnes was lettered in basketball under the late great Coach Samuel Washington. He had held various athletic positions, including assistant football coach, defensive coordinator, assistant basketball coach, and head boys basketball coach. He was recognized as the Region 7 District 3A Coach of the Year and won Region 7 District 3A District Championship (an undefeated season).

“During our search for a new Director of Athletics, Dr. LaRondrial Barnes stood out as the right person for the job,” said superintendent Adrian Hammitte. “His extensive experience and diverse background put him in an excellent position to lead our athletic department. I am extremely proud of what we accomplished under Coach Thompson’s leadership, and I am confident that Dr. Barnes will build on that success. I look forward to working with him as we continue to build a championship culture.”

Barnes was named M.B. Swayze Star Teacher in 2002 and 2008. He is a Board of Trustees Member at Rose Hill No. 2 Missionary Baptist Church. He has more than 17 years in educational leadership.

Dr. Barnes will start his new role on July 1, 2023.
