Joanna (Jody) Smith Barnes, 1948 – 2023

Joanna (Jody) Smith Barnes, 75, passed away peacefully at her home June 9.

She was born in Vicksburg, MS on April 14, 1948, the daughter of Elizabeth Milner Smith and Charles Harry Smith, SR both of Vicksburg. Joanna lived all of her life in Vicksburg and attended H.V. Cooper High School graduating in 1966. She attended Hinds Community College and Mississippi State University. She worked at Waterways Experiment Station for a number of years.

On August 24, 1968, Joanna married her husband John D Barnes at St Paul Catholic Church and had two children.

In 1981, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a battle that she endured for the rest of her life. She was also a Breast Cancer Survivor.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers – Charles Harry Smith Jr., and Richard Earl Smith. She is survived by her husband and two daughters: Teresa Marie Emerson (William) and Shannon Leah Truesdell (Clint) as well as two granddaughters: Abbey Alyssa Truesdell and Ashlyn Leah Truesdell.

Visitation Will be Wednesday, June 14, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. at Glenwood Funeral Home, in Vicksburg; followed by a burial in Greenlawn Cemetery.
