An overnight blaze at the old Jones Upchurch building sparked a large response from Vicksburg firefighters.

Just before midnight, a call to 911 dispatched firefighters to 1803 Clay Street, the old Jones Upchurch building.

“Flames were showing upon arrival, firefighters entered the building and searched the first floor, the second floor and attic space and brought it under control,” stated Fire Chief Craig Danczyk. “I had a discussion with Battalion 1 and our fire investigator and we will investigate the fire.”

Most of the damage was to the first floor and there is significant damage.

“There have been numerous fires. The weather has been reasonably good,” explained Danczyk, noting the colder weather usually causes more fires as people try to stay warm.

The Clay Street fire is being investigated by Fire Investigators with the city and Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s office.

Units Battalion Chief 1, Ladder 3, Ladder 14, Engine 6, Rescue and an ambulance responded to the call.
