Jackson State University welcomes a new band director as Dowell Taylor retires after 34 years with the Tigers.

Dr. Roderick Little is now the new leader of the Sonic Boom of the South. At age 34, he is one of the youngest band directors in JSU history.

In 2012, Little joined the JSU staff as a assistant band director before becoming the marching band director in 2015.

Taylor has worked hard over the past few decades to build the program to what is today, and he’s pleased to place the program in good hands.

“Jackson State University has been good to me, and I would like to think the same in reverse. Since 1984, I have boldly stood on the shoulders of past directors,” Taylor said in a press release. “Now, it’s time for a new generation of directors to stand on mine.”

The Sonic Boom has a great reputation around the nation for their great performances and their ability to draw big crowds during football games and local parades and events all around the South.
