The Board of Mayor and Alderman (BOMA) honored Kameron Jones on Monday for his achievements in baseball.

“We pay tribute to Kameron Jones, a remarkable young man who is dearly loved by the citizens of Vicksburg, Mississippi,” read the resolution presented by Mayor George Flaggs, Jr.

According to Flaggs, Jones, age 21, recently made local and statewide history as the first professional Minor League umpire from Vicksburg.

Jones honed his skills from a young age, playing for the Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Little League. As a teen, Jones played baseball at Vicksburg High School where he graduated in 2020.

In 2022, Jones graduated in the top 10 of his class from Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School. He also completed his Major League Development Umpire program in that same year.

In 2023, he signed his second professional umpire contract, making him the youngest umpire from Mississippi to sign as a Minor League Umpire. In just a few days, Jones will leave for Minor League spring training in Arizona.

Jones belongs to several organizations such as Midsouth Association of Independent Schools, Mississippi High School Athletic Association, Mississippi & Tennessee Community and Junior Colleges and the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The board presented a plaque to Jones for his history-making performance. Jones then took to the podium where he extended gratitude to his family, coaches and teachers who trained and encouraged him over the years.

“We have to honor those that have paid their dues,” Flaggs said.
