The outcome of last Saturday’s Kentucky Derby is now shrouded in controversy, as high profile trainer Bob Baffert revealed Sunday that his winning horse, Medina Spirit, has tested positive for betamethasone, an anti inflammatory drug.

According to the Kentucky Horse Racing regulations, a second test, commonly known as a split sample will now be conducted. Marc Guilfoil, executive director of the KHRC, said the positive test result was received Friday.

Baffert has denied using the drug on the horse, which is legal for use outside of race days.

Baffert has taken 7 winners to the Winners Circle at horse racing’s biggest event. He plans on entering Medina Spirit in next Saturday’s Preakness Stakes, the second leg of horse racing’s vaunted triple crown. If the second test comes back positive, second place finisher, Mandaloun, will be declared the winner.

This will not have any bearing on any wagers that were placed on the race, as all are considered final.
