Knights of Columbus hosts annual food drive for Storehouse Community Food Pantry
The Knights of Columbus is a faith-based service organization that takes on service projects in the community such as preparing and delivering Meals on Wheels and hosting turkey drives and fundraisers. The organization was established in 1882 to provide a means by which Catholic men could support the Catholic Church, provide financial protection to protect their families and engage in works of charity to benefit the less fortunate.
On Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Knights of Columbus Vicksburg Council 898 will accept non-perishable food items and monetary donations at the Walmart located at 2150 Iowa Blvd. to honor their mission. All funds and food will go to the Storehouse Community Food Pantry, located in the Good Shepherd Community Center at 729 Cherry St.
“We represent community, patriotism and faith,” said KoC member Chad Sonnic. “… [W]e do programs such as helping with the food drives for the pantry. Walmart has been very helpful in letting us have it there and the [boy] scouts are helpful as well in transporting the food and collecting it with us.”
Each year the council hosts two food drives, one in the spring and another in the fall. Members also mentor individuals in the community while helping out in any way that they can.
“We sponsor Troop 7 Boy Scouts, and we help work with the church’s Catholic youth organization,” said Sonnic. “If our pastors need any help, our organization is made up of professionals, fraternities, doctors, finance people, plumbers electricians—you name it. So what they can do is call on our organization to help resolve challenges or problems that come up at the church or in the parishes.”
