Briana Knox, a Vicksburg native, has been named the new head softball coach at Vicksburg High School. Her appointment was confirmed on Thursday night by the Vicksburg-Warren School District Board.

Knox expressed her eagerness to get started and provide for the team.

“I feel great about taking over the program and I’m ready to bring some positive things to VHS,” Knox said.

Knox is no stranger to Vicksburg High School; she was once a star softball player who helped the Missy Gators win a district title. Understanding what it takes to win, she was also selected as the Female Athlete of the Year at VHS during her senior year in 2015. Her class had the honor of cutting the ribbon and playing on the new VHS softball field under head coach Brian Ellis.

“I loved playing under Coach Ellis because he not only helped us win but he coached us on and off the field and he always informed us of our strengths and weaknesses,” Knox said. “He always pushes us to be a better team and he’s also a great person.”

Knox continued her athletic journey by playing at the collegiate level at Mississippi Delta Community College and later completed her academic career at Jackson State University.

Now, Knox faces the challenge of reorganizing the softball program, which has been without a coach since May.

“We have to have discipline in order first to build champions and champions can’t be built overnight and I got some big shoes to fill because Ellis really knew his stuff,” Knox added.

VHS has enjoyed considerable success over the years, securing three consecutive district titles. With Knox now at the helm, the Missy Gators are poised to continue their successful streak.
