A large sinkhole has closed part of the roadway on Cherry Street near First East.

Heavy rains overnight caused the storm drains below the roadway to fail. That allowed water to rush into the ground below the road, causing it to collapse just after 4 a.m Wednesday.

Carl Harris with the City of Vicksburg said, “The tremendous rain we had last night broke it again at the bell. We have a storm drain coming down the center of the street and that’s what we’re going to have to deal with for right now. We’re going to be closing the street until we can get someone to come in, assess and fix the situation we’ve got. It’s a little too deep and dangerous for our guys to get in the hole.”

Traffic will be diverted away from the area. “Just obey the signs and we’ll get this situation corrected as quickly as we can,” said Harris.
