Mary Landers will be celebrating 9 years in business as the Levee Street Marketplace on Saturday, Apr. 2, at 10:30 a.m.

Landers grew up in that building that operated for years as a furniture store. In 2013, two years after the Great Flood of 2011 inundated the property, Landers switched gears and turned the space into a Marketplace type shop. A Marketplace shop offers unique wares made or resold by locals who enjoy the challenges of small business without all the hassles of having a brick and mortar location and the associated costs.

A vendor will put their wares in a designated space in the shop and pay an agreed-upon amount for that space. The Marketplace charges a small percentage on each sale to cover bookkeeping cost and overhead.

It is a business formula that works for both the vendor, the Marketplace and most importantly, the consumer.

The Levee Street Marketplace sits between two museums and right at the dock near city front where the cruise ships come in. Those who cruise the Mississippi River have made the Levee Street Marketplace a must-see destination when visiting Vicksburg.
