VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —Michael Battle, a 16-year veteran of the Vicksburg Police Department can now call his son, Chris Watkins, a brother in blue.

Today, Wednesday, Nov. 12, Vicksburg Mayor Willis Thompson swore in 37-year old Watkins as Vicksburg’s newest law enforcement officer. Prior to joining VPD, Watkins served with Mississippi Department of Corrections and in a parole officer capacity.

But they aren’t the only members of the family to serve in law enforcement in Warren County. Watkins’ brother, Cordell Watkins has worked for Warren County Sheriff’s Office since 2010.

“I’m so proud of them both,” said Battle. “He [Watkins] is going to do great here.”

Watkins acknowledged the family trait of serving the blue.

“It’s a family thing,” he said. “I just knew it was time to come home.”

Kedric Green also stood before family and friends to take the oath of service in law enforcement for the city.

Deputy Chief Tommy Curtis said the moment was one for the history books.

“These young men are the first two people to be sworn officers under our new pay raises. They’ve just made history,” said Curtis.

When asked about what was expected of Watkins, Curtis was fast with his reply.

“I know he’s going to do a great job. His dad is an awesome father to his sons, and we are glad to have another person with that type of work ethic,” said Curtis.
