Local firefighter seeks community help
Warren County firefighter Shane Greene has been fighting cancer since 2015 and is seeking aid for travel expenses and bills. Greene has been receiving cancer treatments at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas and is currently unable to work due to the circumstances surrounding his condition.
Greene was diagnosed with cancer in March of 2015. He has undertaken chemotherapy treatments, radiation and three abdominal surgeries which proved to be unsuccessful.
Greene’s uncle and great uncle each served as a member of the Vicksburg Fire Department. Greene took a step into his uncles’ shoes in 1998 when he joined the Northeast Warren County Fire Department. He soon discovered it to be a passion.
“After I worked my first fire, the fire bug bit me,” Greene told Vicksburg Daily News in an earlier interview. “I’ve been hooked ever since.”
Greene spent his childhood bouncing between Vicksburg and his father’s home in Florida. After the death of his father, he made Vicksburg his permanent home. He decided to continue his career in firefighting and started serving the Warren County area as a volunteer firefighter in 2008. He has taken pride in serving those within his community, doing what he loves.
“I love helping the community,” Greene said in an earlier interview with VDN. “If we don’t help the community, no one else will. I don’t do it for any other reason than the community needs us.”
