A lunch room manager is being asked to repay more than $23,000 by an Alabama school board, citing six years of paycheck overpayments.

Christie Payne was promoted to lunch room manager of Chilton County Schools in 2016. Last week, she received a letter from the school system stating she owed $23,465.50 due to being over paid on her paychecks since her promotion. Payne posted the letter on social media.

In the letter, she was asked to repay the sum in one of the following ways:

  • A lump sum
  • A payment of $3,910.90 each year for the next six years
  • A monthly hold-back of $325.91 for 72 months.

For each month the total was not paid, the letter stated an additional $254 would be added to the balance.

Tracy Lesieur with the Alabama Education Association told WVTM, “The legal department will review it, then an attorney will be assigned and then they will take over with the school board attorney to come to a resolution.”
