Restaurant review: Mamma’s Hot Dog Stand by Bethany Claire Johnson

Last week I ate at Mamma’s for the first time. I’m sure y’all have seen the sign on Openwood Street that says, “You bite the meat before the bun!” Well, she wasn’t exaggerating. We ordered double cheeseburgers and the chili cheese dog. I don’t do chili, but my fiancĂ© does. Sonic ain’t got nothing on Mamma’s!
This chili dog was literally heavy to hold. It was overflowing with chili. It was almost as long as my forearm, and instead of shredded cheese she did a nice heaping pile of nacho cheese. My grown man of a fiancĂ©, a towboater at that, could not finish his hot dog in one sitting. It was so good he reheated it and ate it later. I’ve never seen this man eat leftovers in my life.
The real star of the show was the double cheeseburger though! It was the size of my head. For $7 I probably got 1.5 pounds of beef on this thing! It tasted like what Burger King’s advertised burgers look like. I mean, I couldn’t even get my mouth around this thing. It was dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup, and mayo. The cheese was melted, and the burger was so juicy it was dripping. This isn’t a burger you can eat without napkins! What was crazy was that the bun wasn’t soggy.
I really appreciated the food from Mamma’s hot dog stand.
