Just after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy Dustin Keyes stopped a GMC Sierra pick-up truck on Indiana Avenue near the intersection of Lee Road for a traffic violation.

As Deputy Keyes approached the vehicle he could smell marijuana. A subsequent search revealed a packet of marijuana, a set of scales and plastic baggies commonly used as packaging for marijuana. Also recovered was a bulletproof vest and ammunition for a 40-caliber gun. No handgun was found in the vehicle.

The individual was transported to the Warren County Jail where a search of his person prior to incarceration found another small packet of marijuana.

Marcus Wilson, 29, from Vicksburg is being charged with possession with intent to distribute. Because Wilson was already on parole for a prior conviction, the Department of Corrections placed a detainer on him. He is being held without bond. His case will go before the next grand jury.

Eleven U.S. states have legalized recreational marijuana, and 33 states have legalized medical marijuana. In Mississippi, supporters of legalization are circulating a petition to get medical marijuana on the 2020 ballot. More information on that group is here and the link to the petition is here.

Until the law changes, marijuana remains illegal in Mississippi. Distributing marijuana is a serious crime.
