Man killed after allegedly attempting to rob a home

Authorities in Moss Point, Mississippi are investigating a shooting where it appears that a man was killed after attempting to rob a home.

Investigators with the Moss Point Police Department are actively investigating a shooting, which resulted in the death of 18-year-old Jayrell Cox of Moss Point.
The incident occurred Thursday, September 21, 2023, in the 6200 block of Elder Ferry Rd. The occupant of the home told investigators he exited his home on the night of the shooting and discovered two armed suspects waiting under his carport. As he retreated into his home, the men attempted to force entry, at which time they exchanged gunfire with occupant. During the exchange, the two suspects fled on foot through neighboring yards.
The occupant was unaware he had struck anyone during the exchange of gunfire with the suspects.
On Friday, September 22, 2023, at approximately 11AM, officers responded to the area after a resident exited her home and discovered a deceased male in her back yard. Investigators learned
one of the suspects had been struck, fled until he collapsed, succumbing to his injuries.
This case is being investigated as an attempted home invasion resulting in the suspect’s death and at the conclusion of our investigation; it will be presented to a Jackson County Grand Jury.
