Man shot during Sunday evening service at Jones County church

A shooting incident occurred on Sunday evening at Rock Church on Highway 15 South near Lower Myrick Road in Jones County, leaving one hospitalized, according to a report by WLBT.

The shooting on Sunday evening prompted an immediate investigation by the Jones County Sheriff’s Department (JCSD). According to the department, the shooting happened in the parking lot of the church around 6:55 p.m.

Upon arrival, emergency crews found that church members were already attending to an injured man. The man was then taken to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel by EMServ for medical attention.

According to JCSD Sheriff Joe Berlin, a church security team member engaged with the man prior to the shooting. The man allegedly attempted to grab the security member’s gun. A shot was fired, striking him in the upper torso.

JCSD units, EMServ Ambulance Service, Powers Fire & Rescue, and Glade Fire & Rescue responded to the scene.
