In a surprise turn of events, the folk art mecca known as Margaret’s Grocery will not be restored by the Kohler Foundation as previously announced.

In a public post on social media, Mississippi Folk Art Foundation’s Executive Director, Suzi Altman, said the Kohler Foundation will not be restoring the property.

“Unfortunately The Kohler Foundation will Not be restoring Margaret’s Grocery in Vicksburg, Mississippi,” wrote Altman. “Thank you All for your support and interest in our site and our progress. Our work at The Mississippi Folk Art Foundation continues. We are committed to keeping our promise and honoring Rev. Herman Dan Dennis and Margaret Rogers Dennis and their life’s work- Margaret’s Grocery. Their message of “All Is Welcome” is still relevant today and is why we strive to tell their story everyday and preserve their message of “Love All, and Respect All.”

It was just two weeks ago the City of Vicksburg announced it had signed a letter of intent with the Kohler Foundation to accept, maintain and operate the property once it was restored by the Kohler Foundation.
