Mary Jane Abney (Ross) Dodson, beloved Mother and Grandmother, passed on March 24, 2021 after a lengthy illness. Mary Jane was born in Glen Allan, MS to the late James Horace and Ruby (Cochran) Abney, in a year that she never did want to share with anyone. She was 1 of 13 children and grew up playing in the cotton fields of the Delta.

Mary Jane was a fiercely independent woman who loved her family. She was well known for her excellent culinary skills and loved to bake with her children and grandchildren in order to pass down some of her recipes. Desserts were her specialty. Years ago, many people would stop by Carpenter Grocery to buy a homemade “cathead biscuit” that she would bake daily. She was a life-long fan of Elvis and his music especially his gospel music. Mary Jane loved to put up fresh vegetables and especially a good fresh tomato from the garden to make a sandwich.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna Ross (Bill Ray), Cynthia (David) Sullivan, Mary Ross (Pete Pingrey), Dawn Beck, Amanda (Shannon) Allen and one son, Frederick “Dusty” (Crystal) Ross. Mary Jane is also survived by her two brothers, Tanner and Van Abney, fourteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Our family is so very grateful to all the caregivers at Sta-Home Hospice. A very special heartfelt thank you to her caregiver, Sheila Willis.

Visitation will be at Glenwood Funeral Home in Utica, Ms. From 10 a.m.-12 p.m.with service in the Chapel and gravesite will be held at Redbone Methodist Church Cemetery, 43 Burnt House Road, Redbone, Mississippi.
