St. Aloysius baseball player Matthew Pitre has signed with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Pitre made everything official on Monday where a ceremony was held in his honor.

Since the age of three, Pitre has been playing the game of baseball where his mother, Laura Winkler, taught him the game.

“She taught me how to throw and catch, and we did everything right out in the yard,” Pitre said.

Pitre continued to play recreational baseball in his younger years before joining the Flashes Junior High team and playing on the varsity level, where the spring break tournament is one of his fondest memories.

Last year as a junior, Pitre stepped up heavily as a pitcher after teammate Tristan Wilbanks went down with an injury.

“It felt good for them to come to me, and I feel like I did what I was asked, and I would do it again and again,” Pitre said.

Pitre had multiple performances where he struck out many batters, finishing with 69 in the 2023 season under head coach Sid Naron.

Baseball has been a part of Pitre’s life for the most part, and his love for the game will never fade away.

“Baseball is everything to me, and it’s all about the team-building and how we help each other out, and I love the coaches and helping others develop their game,” Pitre said.

Pitre chose MGCCC over Mississippi Delta CC and Belhaven University.

“It’s a great college, and they have great coaches and a nice facility,” he said.

Pitre thanked his support system for sticking by him throughout his career.

“I want to thank my family, friends, coaches, and also Haden Luke, who was a big mentor to me,” Pitre said.

Pitre will be majoring in business and accounting, and is the son of Michael and Laura Winkler.
