Mayor Flaggs opens House session with prayer the day after historic vote

Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. opened Monday’s session of the Mississippi House of Representatives with a prayer. Monday is the first full session of the House since the historic vote to change the divisive state flag. Flaggs served in the legislature from 1988 to 2013 before being elected mayor of Vicksburg.
The flag was installed by an act of legislature in 1894 and has been a lightening rod of motivation both for those who adore the flag and those who felt it was divisive. A new flag design will be decided upon by a nine member commission. The governor, the lieutenant governor and the speaker of the house will each appoint three members to the commission by July 15, and a recommendation for a new design is due no later than Sept. 14.
Voters will decide to accept or reject the new design in the Nov. 3 general election.
