Morgan Alford was recently named the valedictorian of River City Early College.

Alford attended Madison Station Elementary, where grades weren’t all that important to her in the beginning.

“It wasn’t until I moved in with my dad, and then my stepmom showed me how to study, then I got that first A in a class, and I felt that accomplishment, which drove me to keep getting good grades, and I went from being a C student to being an A student,” Alford said.

Morgan reflected that when her fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Redd, read books to the class, was one of her favorite memories in elementary school.

Alford went on to attend Warren Central Junior High School before being accepted to RCEC. Striving for valedictorian wasn’t in Alford’s plans as she just took the prerequisite classes for future nursing school, which gave her GPA the boost to be at the top.

Remaining at the top required lots of focus, but Alford managed to keep things afloat as her grades stayed perfect.

“Studying and being diligent and not procrastinating on my work is what kept me going,” she said. “Being in high school and taking college classes is hard enough on its own, and it’s at a much faster pace, so I had to sacrifice a little bit.”

After working a job while taking big courses, Alford still managed to keep her academics first and was named valedictorian a short time before graduation.

“I was overwhelmed with shock because I wasn’t trying for it, and I didn’t think I would get it. During our senior exit interview, I was salutatorian at the time, but they later called me and told me that I was valedictorian, and I cried because it was a complete shock,” Alfred said.

Alford will be heading to Delta State University to major in nursing after graduating with a 5.105 GPA, where she received both her diploma and associate’s degree.

“My family was my biggest supporters, along with the teachers at RCEC, and I thank them for that,” she said.

Morgan is the daughter of Kevin and Linda Alford, and Kale and Erin Johnson.
