Sadly, Mississippi lost one of its best on Friday. Trooper John Martin Harris of Madison County was killed while on duty.

During a traffic stop on Highway 16 on Friday, Trooper John Martin Harris was hit by a vehicle belonging to Grinston Trucking Company of Clinton. Reports indicate Harris was not able to survive long enough to receive treatment and left behind family, colleagues and friends.

“The Mississippi Highway Patrol mourns the loss of Trooper John Harris,” said Colonel Randy Ginn. “Trooper Harris was a passionate, dedicated public servant and an important member of the MHP family. It is our hope that the funds raised will help John’s wife, Kate, and their two young children.”

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Trooper John Harris (Z-21),” said Commissioner Sean Tindell. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow Troopers.”

The family of Trooper Harris are undoubtedly feeling the loss and facing a difficult time of mourning ahead. To help support the family, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and the Mississippi Highway Patrol have started a fundraiser.

The GoFundMe campaign will definitely not replace nor bring back our fallen hero, but will serve to allow the family time to mourn, which is what anyone would need at this time.

This Memorial Day Weekend is not just a time to remember the troops that keep us safe overseas, but also the troops that keep us safe at home. If you are in a position to help a fallen hero, please visit the links above.
