Minor earthquake in NE Mississippi this morning

Published

on

This USGS map shows all earthquakes recorded in the Mississippi area since 1900. The small orange dot is where an earthquake was recorded Nov. 21.

If you were in Northeast Mississippi around 7 a.m. today, you may have felt the earth move—or not.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the area 2.3 miles east of Booneville experienced a very mild earthquake this morning that measured 2.3 on the Richter scale.

Although unusual, earthquakes are not unheard of in Mississippi. In January, Hollandale felt a 3.7 earthquake. Prior to that was another 2.0 trembler near Farmington in August, 2013.

The strongest earthquake recorded by the USGS occurred in December 1931 west of Granada. It measured 4.6.

Generally, earthquakes that register below 4 or 5 on the Richter scale are considered minor and cause little to no damage. At 2.5 or less, it’s likely the quake wasn’t felt at all, although it did register on seismographs.
