Mississippi and Louisiana preparing for potentially active hurricane season

Published

on

Hurricane Season officially began on June 1.

Officials with Mississippi Emergency Management Agency were on the Gulf Coast this week meeting with Emergency Management Directors and other stakeholders to shore up plans ahead of potential storms.

Meetings were recently held between the Mississippi Department of Transportation and Louisiana officials regarding the use of ContraFlow on Interstate 55 and 59 should it be deemed necessary. ContraFlow would turn all lanes into North bound expressways from the state line to Hattiesburg and somewhere south of Jackson, respectively.

The practice would necessitate the coordination of numerous law enforcement agencies. The practice and plans have not been used in several years and meetings were held to review potential areas that might have experienced change since the last occurrence.

MEMA officials are encouraging everyone who might be impacted by a hurricane to review their storm plans.

Many of these tips cross over into general weather preparation and other natural and man made disaster preparedness. You can learn more by visiting their website at www.MSMEMA.org
