Mississippi COVID-19 deaths at 20 with more than 900 confirmed cases
The number of new cases in Mississippi jumped by 90 and deaths increased by four as of 6 p.m. Monday, March 30.
The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting 937 cases and 20 deaths this morning. MSDH reports new statistics each morning with test results from the previous day. The results include those from the State Public Health Laboratory and from outside laboratories.
Warren County continues to report only one case. Neighboring Issaquena County has not reported a case, and Claiborne County has also reported one case.
Hinds and Desoto counties continue to be the state’s hotspots, with 90 and 84 cases, respectively. Desoto County has reported one death.
The MSDH lab has tested 4,454 individuals and recorded 407 positive results. The balance of the 937 results come from outside labs; however, the numbers those labs have tested have not been made available. It is impossible to know, therefore, what percentage of those tested are returning positive results.
COVID-19 is infecting men and women in all age groups. Those over 60, however, are far more susceptible to die from the disease. Of the 20 deaths reported in Mississippi, 16 have been people over age 60, and 11 have been 70 or older.
Thirty-two percent of reported cases have required hospitalization.
“Anyone with symptoms of fever, severe cough or severe chest pains – especially those who are older or in poor health – should call their doctor or healthcare provider for instructions on safely being examined,” the MSDH website states. “Healthcare providers can assess your health history and symptoms, and perform testing for COVID-19 as needed.”
Today, Vicksburg is hosting a one-day free drive-through testing facility at the Pemberton Square Mall.
