During 2022, House Bill 1035 was enacted, marking the establishment of a new velvet buck hunting season in Mississippi. Hunters eager to partake in this distinctive event will need to procure a specialized Velvet Season Permit. Starting from August 1, 2023, these permits can be purchased wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold.

With the advent of the hunting season approaching fast, hunters are gearing up to hunt this September. The specifics are as follows:

The velvet buck season will be held from Sep. 15 to 17, 2023. The hunting grounds are restricted to private lands only. The type of game permissible to be hunted includes legal bucks from the respective Deer Management Units. The Deer Management Units can be identified here.

The hunting equipment allowed for this season is limited to archery, which includes longbows, recurves, compound bows, and crossbows. There are no constraints on the minimum or maximum draw weight or minimum length of the arrow. Both fixed and mechanical broadheads are permitted.

For the pricing structure, unless exempt or possessing a lifetime license, all hunters must have a valid Velvet Season Permit. The fee for residents is $10.00. For non-residents, the Velvet Season Permit is bundled with the deer permit, which is priced at $50.00. Non-residents possessing deer permits that do not expire until after the Special Velvet Buck Season will not need to renew their permits before the expiry date to participate.

The following additional regulations should be noted:

The bag limit is capped at one (1) legal buck, which will be counted towards the hunter’s annual antlered deer bag limit. All hunters, including those exempt from licenses, are obligated to report their harvest by 10 p.m. on the day of the harvest. This report can be submitted via the MDWFP Smartphone App or MDWFP web portal.

All harvested bucks are mandated for CWD sampling, which should be submitted to a MDWFP CWD Drop-off freezer or to an MDWFP participating taxidermist within 5 days of the harvest.
