Mississippi High School drops its ‘Confederate’ team name

A northern Mississippi high school will change its team name due to recent concerns made by residents.

Last week, the Lowndes County School District voted to drop the name, the Confederates, that many people, including African Americans, see as offensive. The announcement came earlier this week that Caledonia High School will no longer use the name it has used since 1957.

One of the board members who voted for the change is Brian Clark.

“I have been in that community my entire life,” Clark told WJTV. “I don’t see anything racist going on. It’s just some people outside looking in viewing it that way, and it’s just time to change that stance.”

The new name will be decided by the principal, students, alumni and people of the community, who will find a name and mascot for Caledonia High that everyone can agree on.
