Mississippi Mayor dies of COVID-19

Wiggins, Mississippi, Mayor Joe Miles died Sunday from complications of  COVID-19.

Miles passed away at a hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi, after being hospitalized due to double pneumonia that he contracted shortly after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

The City of Wiggins posted the information about Miles’ death on its Facebook page Sunday.

It is with profound sadness that we announce that Mayor Joel Miles has passed away. We appreciate your prayers. Please continue to pray for the family and the City. We will
miss him.

Weeks before his death, Miles warned everyone about how serious the virus is and how badly it was affecting him.

“If anybody tries to tell you [COVID-19] is nothing serious, do not listen. It is very serious,” Miles said to WLOX. “I have had an awful time with it, to be quite honest.”

Miles was elected mayor in 2013 and was a lifelong resident of Stone County.
