Mississippi Quilters 2020 Spring Gathering in Vicksburg starts today

A dozen quilters first met in October 1990 at Ann Root’s Olde Town Stitchery quilt shop in Clinton to discuss the possibility of forming a state quilt organization. They wondered if there would be enough interest to make such an organization possible. The first gathering was held in February 1991 at the Paul B. Johnson State Park to learn, stitch and share.  About 180 attended.

This year, the 2020 Spring Gathering of the Mississippi Quilting Association takes place at the convention center in Vicksburg today and tomorrow.

“I have been a member of MQA for almost ten years, having previously served MQA as a regional rep,” said Linda Levy, 2019 president of MQA.  “I was first exposed to the current quilting world about ten years ago by a friend who was a member of the Sew Peaceful (now Gumtree) Guild of Tupelo. I am a member of Gumtree, Golden Triangle in Starkville and Piecemakers of Oxford.”

Today, there are nine regions in the association throughout Mississippi, with about 30 area guilds. Every year MQA gets together for a Spring and a Fall Gathering and hosts multiple events in and around the state of Mississippi. The Gatherings are never in the same Mississippi city back to back. Last year, the Spring Gathering was held in Louisville, and this year Vicksburg welcomes around 150 nimble sewers to the River City.

Vicksburg falls in the West Central Region of the Association. Vicksburg Quilters meet on the second Saturday of the month at the Vicksburg Senior Citizens Center at 801 South St. at 9:30 a.m. Marilyn Daggett serves as President of Vicksburg Quilters

The Mississippi Quilting Association welcomes walk-ins for any interested local quilters in Vicksburg to join in on the two-day Spring Gathering conference. Quilts will be on display and awards will be announced. Non-members are asked to pay $5 to attend. The conference begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Vicksburg Convention Center, 1600 Briggs Hopson Blvd.
