In a wild playoff game on Friday night, the Missy Gators crept away with a 59-57 win over Cleveland Central to advance to the next round.

Early on in the game VHS had no problem scoring and containing CC as they went up by 20 points but things soon changed and the Missy Gators were in a situation where they had to fight for the victory.

Ja’Na Colenburg led the team with 15 points followed by Destini Sims who added 13 on the boards.

Midway in the fourth quarter VHS had a 46-39 lead until Sims put a big spin move on her defender and made a tough layup. Cleveland Central kept playing hard and brought it to within 3, trailing 51-48.

Janiah Caples and Sims both drew some key fouls late in the game but big shots made by Cleveland along with free throws tied the game at 55. Caples soon drew another foul and knocked down both shots giving the Missy Gators a 57-55 advantage.

With 1:17 left in the game, Layla Carter made a steal and missed a layup with much of the crowd thinking a foul should have been called, turning the ball back over to CC.

The Missy Gators eventually got possession of the ball again as Caples is quickly fouled, making one of her free throws. Carter drew the next foul and made the second shot as VHS went up 59-57. Time would soon expire after a big steal with the Missy Gators taking home the win.

Carter ended the night with 11 points and Caples put up nine while Kalia Bland added six.

The Missy Gators will move on to play Neshoba Central next Friday at home.
