Vicksburg High School girl’s soccer team’s memorable season came to an end on Saturday night in a 5-0 loss to Saltillo.

“It’s always a little bit of a heartbreak and we played a whole game this year which is more than last year,” VHS Head Coach Samantha Bailey said.

Bailey was filled with emotions after the loss.

The game started off at a fast pace where Saltillo eventually took the 3-0 halftime.

Multiple saves by goalkeeper Ava Pritchard kept the Missy Gators afloat for awhile until the final few minutes.

VHS’ record stands at 9-5-2 as they witnessed all of their hard working paying off throughout the year. A district title, trip to the third round of the playoffs,  and playoff win for the first time in over a decade was just a few accomplishments this year from the Gator program under Head Coach Samantha Bailey.

Although the Missy Gators stood tall while shaking hands with Saltillo, after the game many of the ladies were soaked in tears by the time they exited the field.

“I’ll be coming back to watch y’all play and I know you will make me proud,” senior Jamiyah Gaines told Bailey.

The Missy Gators were the only team in Warren County to go beyond the first round of the playoffs this season and they will be returning most of their roster next year.

I am so proud of the way my girls battled out there,” Bailey said. Last year we lost to Saltillo 7-0 so even in the loss you can still see the growth we have had.”

“Pregame I told the girls that year after year we face adversity, but what people don’t realize is that adversity has only made us stronger. That has propelled us to this point. The fact that many people doubt the things that the ladies of Vicksburg High School can accomplish, has only ignited the drive in each of them.”

“Anyone who watched the game tonight saw that fight in those ladies. On the sidelines the adrenaline was high and when it was over it all came crashing down. I think what made this loss so tough was having made it this far, to have north state within reach, and then lose it. We also said goodbye to two seniors who have had such a presence on the field all three of my years. The last thing I told the girls tonight was that the coaching staff is extremely proud of them and we will only improve from here.”
