Missy Gators season ends after loss to Neshoba

The Vicksburg High School Missy Gators’ season ended on Friday night in a 97-76 loss to Neshoba Central.

With big points coming from Destini Sims, Layla Carter and Ja’Na Colenburg, the Missy Gators were up 26-16 by the end of the first quarter.

VHS found themselves up by three (33-30) with only three minutes left in the half after Sims knocked down two free throws.

Shortly after Janiah Caples and Jelisa Tyler broke through for layups, the Lady Rockets responded with a pair steals and quick shooting to bring the score to 40-38 at halftime.

Neshoba knocked down a three coming out of halftime. VHS’s Carter responded with two easy baskets followed up by a three-pointer for Colenburg. Neshoba County were able to get hot behind the three point line to keep a 49-45 lead with 5:39 left in the Third quarter.

Just two minutes later, VHS found themselves trailing 56-47.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter Neshoba had an 18 point lead and would remain on top to take the win.

Layla Carter led VHS with 24 points followed by Janiah Caples and Ja’Na Colenburg who both added 15. Destini Sims contributed nine points before fouling out and Jelisa Tyler scored six.

The Missy Gators finished their season under head coach Troy Stewart with a 21-8 record.
