Mississippi State University football coach Mike Leach issued an apology after posting a meme on social media of a woman knitting a noose.

The tweet has now been deleted, but the image offended many people including some MSU football players and an MSU professor who saw the post. MSU players Erroll  Thompson, Fabian Lovett and Kobe Jones all responded with different emojis, signaling that they were not happy about the post.

Margaret A. Hagerman, an assistant professor at MSU, made a clear response on the tweet before it was taken down.

“Lynching jokes are incredibly offensive anywhere, and especially in Mississippi,” Hagerman wrote.

Leach issued an apology via Twitter on Thursday after catching heat about the situation.

“I sincerely regret if my choice of images in my tweets were found offensive,” Leach wrote. “I had no intention of offending anyone.”
