MSU Comes Out Swinging

Editor’s Note:  This article was originally scheduled for publication on September 2, 2011.  A technical glitch prevented it from being published on time.  This glitch has been repaired and we look forward to many more articles from Larry! Considering your normal first game of the season glitches you must say that MSU was impressive in blasting Memphis 59-14 last night. Granted Memphis will finish at or near the bottom of Conference USA in 2011, they were not a Division 1-AA opponent either. The Dogs picked right up where they left off in 2010 topping the 50 point marker in back to back outings scoring 52 on Michigan and now the 59 on Memphis. Some of the Ole Miss fans might begin to have that little bit of worry in the back of their minds. MSU was not without their faults however. Silly illegal procedure penalities and special team errors. I would also add some defensive concerns, though most would say I am nit picking. It seemed as though the Dogs got lax on the defensive side of the ball even in the first half. Time and time again MSU defenders gave huge cushions to Memphis recievers while a true freshman QB threw at them making completetion. It just seemed to me scheme wise that MSU was a little different team defensively. I guess we can mark that up to first game jitters for new defensive coordinator Chris Wilson. Anyway it was the first game and some of these things go down early in a season. Who could have dreamed only 3 seasons ago we would be finding fault in a 59-14 season opening victory for MSU over Memphis. Up next for MSU is another set of Tigers and these Tigers will be an SEC version. Dan Mullen will have an extra 2 days to get his team prepared to travel to face the defending National Champions on September 10th. I am not sure we will be able to find out much about Auburn this weekend since they are playing lowly Utah State. One thing you can be sure of is that we will know much more about MSU and Auburn after week 2 of this 2011 football season.]]]]> ]]>
