National Guard celebrates it’s 385th Birthday

December 13th marks the 385th birthday of the National Guard. An official militia for the first time in the American Colonies was established by the Massachusetts General Court in 1636, making the National Guard the oldest military organization in America.
The National Guard is a component of the United States Army. The Guard is primarily composed of citizen-like soldiers who have full time, civilian jobs or are attending school or for some, both.
The National Guard’s Mission is for its members to serve both their community and country. The wide set of skills makes it possible to respond to domestic emergencies, overseas combat missions and more. In 385 years of service, the Guard always responds with speed, strength, and efficiency, helping to defend American freedom and ideals.
Today, close to 350,000 men and women serve in the National Guard and the Air National Guard, which makes up 39% of the Army’s operational force.
