Newton Elementary 6-year-old was victim of accidental discharge from a student carrying a weapon in backpack

A 6-year-old who was shot at Newton Elementary School on Thursday is still in unknown condition after being airlifted to a Jackson trauma center.

The child (name withheld) was a victim of an accidental discharge from gun being carried in another student’s backpack. According to a social media post by WLBT, the victim is Newton Elementary’s Homecoming King and was to take part in the homecoming ceremony on Friday.

According to Newton Police Chief Randy Patrick, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the investigation.

It is unknown what consequences await the child who was in possession of the firearm.
