Just before 10 p.m. Sunday, a Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper stopped a U-Haul box truck on Pemberton Boulevard after following the vehicle from Interstate 20. The trooper asked for permission to look inside the rear compartment of the truck. Upon searching the compartment, he discovered that a number of people are actually living in the U-Haul.

At this point the trooper called for assistance.

After repeated unsuccessful attempts to recontact the trooper by radio, an “officer down” alert was issued.

Multiple Vicksburg Police officers, Warren County Sheriff’s deputies, and additional MHP troopers responded to the alarming call. Thankfully, the trooper is fine. He was trying to maintain a safe position and deal with getting the occupants of the truck into a position for his and their safety.

Officials are conducting an investigation to see if any of the individuals have warrants and whether the vehicle is legally in the possession of the person operating it.
