Officials warn of potential for icy conditions in Warren County

Warren County may be in for some icy conditions overnight. Officials are urging caution during commuting.

Warren County Emergency Director John Elfer stated, “There’s about a 40% chance that overnight, starting around 7 p.m., going into the early morning Friday hours, 3 a.m., 4 a.m., that it’s possible we could see some sleet and some freezing rain.”

Elfer said that the warm conditions the area has experienced has not set the area up for a scenario like last year. However, early morning commuters could see some icy conditions on bridges.

“Some of the problem areas will probably stay on the northern side of Warren County; the Yazoo River bridge, the Deer Creek bridges on 61 North, those bridges that go between Highway 61 and Eagle Lake could have some ice on them,” explained Elfer.  “It’s a big system. It’s over 1,000 miles long, it stretches from Texas, up through the plains, all the way up into the New England area.”.

The storm system is expected to continue moving through for several days. Elfer went on to state that other areas of the county may also experience similar conditions. Those traveling should do so with caution.
