Ones to watch: Macy Watts

If you ever find yourself strolling the halls of River City Early College or dropping your young child off at Crossway Church’s day care, you are probably familiar with a girl by the name of Macy Watts.
You’ll know her because she’s the friendly one smiling and ready to help you out with whatever you may need. If you think her positive, upbeat personality is impressive, her academic accomplishments will blow your mind.
Macy attended Bowmar Elementary School where she was always on the A/B Honor Roll. She was extremely involved in extracurricular clubs and activities. She was well-known for her willingness to help out the teachers whenever they needed. She gave tours around the school for visitors, and was a natural pick to receive the prestigious Leadership Award from Bowmar. During this time, Macy was also heavily involved in community service and her church.
She would the go on to be a standout at The Academy of Innovation where she spoke at the VWSD Convocation in front of hundreds of VWSD employees and talked at several Leader In Me events.
Macy continued to impress at River City Early College where she really started racking up community service hours and serves as a role model for so many in Vicksburg.
One specific example occurred her freshman year when she and some fellow students created Lead Team at RCEC. Lead Team is a group of students who push their school to be better leaders in not only school, but life. Macy also led a few fundraisers that year, which contributed to her being awarded the Cougar Award and her Black Cord.
Her sophomore year consisted of integrating new students into Lead Team, her Green Cord, her Blue Cord, the Compass Award and being inducted into Honors Society.
Macy’s junior year was a bit more difficult, but she proved to be up to the challenge. She began taking a full schedule of college classes, as opposed to her previous high school classes. This caused Watts to have to take a step back from community service and school projects, but she powered through it all! In her most difficult year of high school, Macy participated in Hind’s Community College’s Student Government, Hind’s Dean’s List, the English Honors Society, and got her green cord.
“COVID made my senior year harder, but I made the best of it,” Watts said. Some of her accomplishments for the finale of her high school career include volunteering at the COVID-19 vaccination drive-through, Long Range Shooter of the Year, Top 30 Christian Leaders of the Future, Hind’s Dean’s List, the 3E scholarship, Presidents of Service Award, All Mississippi Academic Team, and the Merit Health Scholarship along with many other scholarships.
Macy was asked if she had some advice for younger people in high school who wanted to achieve as much as she did.
“Just be yourself. If I hadn’t accepted who I was early on and stopped caring about what other people think, I wouldn’t have gotten this far. Just be yourself and try your hardest.”
